Charles

For Charles, the path to Depaul House had a lot to do with a drug problem and not being able to save money.  He realized he was not progressing and went to the Whosoever Gospel Mission where he stayed for about seven months.  One of the counselors there suggested that the program at Depaul might be a good fit.  As Charles said, “Now that I am here, I haven’t looked back beyond my stay at Whosever.  I’ve been at Depaul since May 2010 and I have my own room and a door that locks.  There is some structure here, but I basically have freedom to do what I want.”

“I like the staff here. I get along with the residents, and the counselors listen and try to do what you ask them to do.  My biggest problem is money because I like to spend it…but I take to heart the suggestions about budgeting and I pay my fees and savings on time. There are other resources here that you can take advantage of and that support has been there when I needed it.”

Charles is the caretaker at the Mann Music Theatre where he works eight months out of the year, and he frequently works 60 hour weeks.  Charles knows what his goals are and is motivated to achieve them.  He figures he will be at Depaul for 8 months and have enough money saved to get a place of his own, stay working, take care of his health and stay in touch with his family of three daughters, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
