The Latest from Our Executive Director

A data-worm has been boring through my brain all week. The Commissioner for Social Services for Niagara County, New York told those assembled for a conference in Niagara Falls last Friday that 33% of the residents of the county receive public benefits. One out of every three residents receives cash assistance or food stamps or is enrolled in Medicaid. This is a 54% increase since 2006. 

I suppose that there are a number of ways to look at this information. It is a measure of the depth of the recession that we are still battling. It is a snapshot of the scope of the social safety net in one corner of the country. It is a breathtaking reminder of the extent of poverty in the US.
